“Wisconsin Ignores New Federal Guidance on Vaccines”

Despite a recent announcement by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that the federal government will no longer recommend COVID-19 vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women, Wisconsin’s state health department says it will maintain its current recommendations.
In a video posted May 27, Secretary Kennedy stated that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would scale back its recommendations for these groups, though no new scientific studies or safety data were cited in the announcement. Days later, the CDC released updated guidance confirming that while vaccines may still be offered to children based on physician and parental judgment, they are no longer broadly recommended during pregnancy.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) criticized the change, stating in a June 4 press release that the CDC’s updated position “was not made based on new data, evidence or scientific or medical studies,” and did not follow normal review processes. Nevertheless, the state agency said it would continue recommending the vaccine for children and pregnant individuals.
This divergence between federal and state guidance comes as public trust in health institutions has waned, especially after years of shifting narratives and mandates. Many Americans have raised concerns over vaccine efficacy and the potential risks associated with mRNA technology, particularly for lower-risk populations like children and pregnant women.
Some health professionals continue to promote the vaccine, citing earlier studies. Dr. Amy Domeyer, a Madison-based OB-GYN and former chair of the Wisconsin section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), said her recommendation to patients remains unchanged. “We know the COVID vaccine is safe in pregnancy — that research and data has not changed,” she claimed, despite the federal pullback.
Still, even among medical professionals, there is recognition that the conversation around COVID-19 vaccination is becoming increasingly complex. Patrick Remington, an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, acknowledged that debates about risks and benefits are legitimate. “That’s part of how science works,” he said, adding that such discussions should be guided by the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a body not scheduled to meet again until later in June.
Critics argue that when major decisions are made outside the standard advisory framework, especially without clear data, it raises questions about transparency and political influence. Secretary Kennedy’s move to revise recommendations independently reflects broader frustration with what many see as bureaucratic inertia or even capture within public health institutions.
Meanwhile, insurance coverage remains a practical concern. While Wisconsin’s Medicaid program will continue covering the COVID vaccine, there is uncertainty about how private insurers will respond to the changing federal position. Dr. Domeyer noted that some patients have already asked whether vaccine coverage will persist in the coming months.
According to CDC data, only about 14% of pregnant women nationwide have received the most recent COVID-19 vaccine — a sign that public confidence remains low in this group. In Wisconsin, fewer than 20% of residents have received a dose of the updated vaccine, with the majority of recipients being adults aged 65 and older.
As conflicting guidance continues to emerge, many individuals are left unsure of what to do. Remington suggested that people speak with their doctors to evaluate personal risk factors. Still, for a growing number of Americans, especially younger and healthier populations, the argument for routine COVID-19 vaccination is becoming increasingly unconvincing.
