“Marines Being Deployed to Los Angeles Amid Riots”

A battalion of approximately 500 U.S. Marines has been mobilized to Los Angeles in response to ongoing civil unrest related to recent immigration enforcement operations, according to a senior defense official. The Marines, drawn from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines based at Twentynine Palms, California, have been tasked with securing federal property and protecting federal personnel. The duration of their deployment has not been specified.
The deployment comes days after President Donald Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops into the city following a series of demonstrations that escalated into riots over the weekend. The protests began in response to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids carried out as part of a broader immigration enforcement initiative.
According to defense officials, the Marines will not engage in law enforcement activities, and the rules of engagement concerning crowd interaction remain unclear. Their role will be limited to the protection of federal assets unless broader authority is granted.
On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s deployment of National Guard troops without state authorization. In a statement, the governor’s office criticized the mobilization, calling it “unwarranted” and “unprecedented.”
“From our understanding, this is moving Marines from one base to another base. At this time, the information we have is that Marines are not being deployed—there is a difference between that and being mobilized,” Newsom’s office wrote on social media. “The level of escalation is completely unwarranted, uncalled for, and unprecedented — mobilizing the best-in-class branch of the U.S. military against its own citizens.”
Governor Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta allege that the Trump administration overstepped its authority and infringed on state sovereignty by activating National Guard forces without state consent.
President Trump defended the move during remarks to the press, stating, “I think we have it very well under control. It was heading in the wrong direction. It’s now heading in the right direction.”
The President also issued a warning regarding assaults on uniformed personnel. “If protesters spit in the face of guardsmen in Los Angeles, they’ll be hit harder than they’ve ever been hit before,” Trump said. He later reiterated the message on social media, writing, “If they spit, we will hit. Such disrespect will not be tolerated.”
Under the Posse Comitatus Act, the use of federal military forces in domestic law enforcement is generally prohibited unless the Insurrection Act is invoked. It remains unclear whether the current mobilization is being conducted under that authority.
The recent protests in Los Angeles, initially peaceful, have intensified in recent days. Demonstrators opposing federal immigration enforcement actions have clashed with law enforcement, resulting in property damage including burned vehicles and vandalized public buildings. At least several dozen individuals have been arrested, according to local authorities.
Demonstrations have also spread internationally, with pro-immigration protesters in Mexico City rallying in solidarity with those in Los Angeles.
Governor Newsom has accused the administration of attempting to “manufacture a crisis” to justify expanded federal control. “This president is hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control,” he said Monday.
The situation continues to develop, and further federal or legal responses are anticipated in the coming days.
