“Senate Votes 51–50 on Trump Megabill”
In a dramatic 51–50 vote, the Senate passed the Trump megabill late Tuesday, advancing the $3.3 trillion legislation packed with Republican priorities including permanent tax cuts, deep spending reductions, and Medicaid reforms. Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote, sending the Trump megabill back to the House for final negotiations.
The bill represents a cornerstone of President Trump’s second-term agenda. It includes a permanent extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, $50 billion for rural hospitals, and over $1.5 trillion in targeted spending cuts. It also boosts defense funding and imposes new work requirements for SNAP recipients, particularly in states with high payment error rates.
Republican senators largely supported the measure, with the exception of Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Thom Tillis (R-NC). No Democrats voted in favor, warning that the bill could cut millions from Medicaid rolls and add over $3.3 trillion to the deficit under current law, per the Congressional Budget Office.
House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, say they plan to deliver the bill to Trump’s desk by July 4. However, divisions remain in the House, with fiscal conservatives calling for deeper cuts and moderates concerned about impacts to healthcare.
The Trump megabill overcame multiple Senate challenges, including attempted amendments and a long weekend of procedural hurdles. Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised the package as fiscally responsible and essential for national security.
Despite Democratic objections, the bill’s passage marks a major political win for Republicans and a legislative milestone in reshaping the post-COVID economy.
