“Idaho Firefighter Ambush: Two Killed, Sniper Wess Roley Identified”
The Idaho firefighter ambush that left two dead and one critically injured has shocked the community of Coeur d’Alene. Authorities say 20-year-old Wess Roley set a fire on Canfield Mountain to lure firefighters into a deadly trap.
When first responders arrived around 2 p.m., Roley opened fire from the trees. Two firefighters were fatally shot, and a third was seriously wounded. In a chilling 911 call, one firefighter said, “It’s clear this fire was set intentionally to draw us in.”
The Idaho firefighter ambush ended after law enforcement located Roley’s body near his weapon, though it’s unclear if he died by suicide or was shot by police.
The victims have not yet been named. The surviving firefighter is in stable condition.
Investigators have yet to confirm a motive, but internet sleuths quickly noticed the incident happened exactly 24 years after the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department burned down the former Aryan Nations compound during a 2001 training exercise just 7 miles away.
That property had been seized from white supremacist leader Richard Butler following a civil rights lawsuit.
Despite the timing, no confirmed links between Roley and extremist groups have emerged. Officials say the investigation into the Idaho firefighter ambush is ongoing.
