“Trump recommends 50% tariff on EU starting June 1”

President Donald Trump on Friday announced a proposal to implement a 50% tariff on all goods imported from the European Union, effective June 1, 2025. The move follows what he described as fruitless negotiations aimed at reaching a new trade agreement with the EU bloc.
Trump made the recommendation via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that the European Union has long leveraged trade policies and regulatory structures to the detriment of the United States. “The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with,” Trump wrote.
Citing persistent issues including value-added taxes (VAT), non-monetary trade barriers, regulatory penalties, and what he referred to as “unjustified lawsuits” against American firms, Trump argued that the existing trade imbalance—reportedly exceeding $250 billion annually—is no longer sustainable. “Our discussions with them are going nowhere,” he added.
The proposed tariff would apply broadly to EU imports but include an exemption for products built or manufactured within the United States. Trump characterized the recommendation as a necessary corrective to level the playing field and incentivize domestic production.
The European Union has not yet issued an official response to the tariff proposal, though previous trade tensions between the U.S. and EU—particularly during Trump’s first term—have drawn sharp criticism from European officials. Analysts suggest that such a sweeping tariff, if enacted, could spark retaliatory measures from Brussels and escalate trade frictions across key industries, including automotive, aerospace, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.
While Trump is not currently in office, his policy statements continue to influence Republican leadership and U.S. trade discourse. If adopted in future legislative or executive action, the tariff could mark a significant departure from existing transatlantic trade frameworks, many of which have been shaped by decades of negotiated cooperation through entities like the World Trade Organization.
The U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative have not commented on whether the proposal has been formally reviewed or is under consideration by current federal authorities.
