The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly rejected an effort to impeach former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, following his decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities without seeking Congressional approval. The Trump Iran impeachment vote failed in a 344–79 roll call, with 128 Democrats siding with Republicans to block the measure.
The impeachment resolution was introduced by Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who has previously led unsuccessful efforts to remove Trump from office. Green claimed that the strike on Iran—ordered by Trump last Saturday—represented an abuse of executive power, bypassing the constitutional requirement for Congress to authorize acts of war. In his words, the retaliation Iran launched on Monday constituted a “de facto declaration of war” against the U.S.
Despite these warnings, the House refused to back Green’s resolution, signaling a rare moment of bipartisan agreement. According to Politico, no Republicans supported impeachment, and a significant bloc of Democrats—many of whom have criticized Trump in the past—opted not to endorse what appeared to be a politically risky escalation.
The Trump Iran impeachment vote came just days after the United States reportedly brokered a ceasefire in the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, which followed the initial U.S. airstrike. While details of the ceasefire remain limited, the situation has de-escalated for now, reducing immediate pressure on Congress to respond with punitive measures against the former president.
Al Green’s resolution marks at least the third time he has tried to impeach Donald Trump, with prior efforts focusing on racial rhetoric and obstruction of justice claims during Trump’s presidency.
