Maine State Representative Heidi Sampson “Deeply Concerned” Over University Covid-19 Mandates
I am a Maine State Representative and I’ve been deeply concerned about the Covid-19 shots being mandated to attend college.
On March 2nd, my Republican colleagues and I on the Legislative Education Committee found a way to protect the students of the university system from needing the jab to attend. Since the legislature is currently negotiating the biennium budget, my committee colleagues were united with me in the efforts to reject all funding requests. I then announced, on the record, that we will reject all funding the university requests as long as the Vax mandate is in place. Subsequently, I shared our strategy with the entire Republican House Caucus at which point our leadership backed us up. Then the Senate Republican leadership back us as well.
Furthermore, other committees voted against university funding in solidarity with the Education Committee. Since both Republican Caucuses stood united, the writing was on the wall, the entire budget was at risk of achieving the 2/3 support needed to pass. Exactly, one week later, March 10th, the University lifted their mandate effective for this ’23 spring semester.
Here’s my interview with Ric Tyler on WVOM about the issue.
