“Georgia Man Charged for Threatening Tulsi Gabbard’s Family”

A Georgia man has been charged with transmitting interstate threats after allegedly sending death threats to the husband of U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday.
Federal prosecutors say Aliakbar Mohammad Amin sent multiple threatening messages to Abraham Williams, Gabbard’s husband, between March 29 and April 1. Williams reported the messages to law enforcement. It is unclear how Amin obtained Williams’ phone number.
According to court documents, Amin’s messages included threats to kill Gabbard and her family. FBI agents also discovered posts on Amin’s X (formerly Twitter) account, including one image showing a gun pointed at a photograph of Gabbard.
“Threatening to harm public officials is a criminal act that cannot be excused as political discourse,” said Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Richard S. Moultrie Jr. “Our office, in coordination with our law enforcement partners, will vigorously prosecute individuals who commit these acts of violence.”
On April 8, FBI agents interviewed Amin at his home in Georgia. According to court filings, Amin admitted to sending the threats, citing frustration with U.S. foreign policy concerning Gaza. He also confirmed he was the person holding the gun in the images targeting Gabbard and her husband.
Gabbard is one of several public officials who have received threats following the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
In the messages to Williams, Amin allegedly wrote: “Tell your wife to always be on her best behavior and not to disobey Mr. Vladimir Putin’s orders. We are friendly bears [Russian flag and bear emoji], but we can also be angry bears [same emojis].” Prosecutors said Amin also told Williams that his family would remain safe “as long as you continue to covertly work for us,” though it was unclear who Amin was referring to.
Additional messages reportedly included threats to destroy the couple’s Texas residence, and references to carrying out mass casualty events. One message repeated the motto of the Houthi rebel group: “God is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, Curse be upon the Jews, Victory to Islam.”
The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, are an Iran-backed rebel group based in Yemen. In response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, the Biden administration re-designated the Houthis as a “specially designated global terrorist” organization in January 2024.
Prosecutors also noted that Amin’s social media posts contained violent imagery, including a gun pointed at Gabbard and Williams, symbols such as the hammer and sickle, and captions referencing a “great war of justice” that would “turn American soil to ashes.”
Amin is currently in federal detention pending trial. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison under federal statutes prohibiting interstate threats.
Ongoing Threats Against Officials
According to a USA TODAY review of recent Justice Department reports, several individuals across the country have been charged with threatening current or former members of the Trump administration since the July assassination attempt.
In Pennsylvania, Thomas Mathew Crooks opened fire at a Trump rally, injuring Trump and two attendees and killing a third. Secret Service agents fatally shot Crooks at the scene.
Other recent cases include Ryan Routh, who was charged after allegedly hiding at Trump International Golf Club with a loaded rifle and intent to harm the former president. In Texas, Robert Wilson King was charged with threatening to kill ICE agents via social media, and in Pennsylvania, Shawn Monper was charged with threatening Trump and federal agents in online posts.
