“FBI Suppressed China Election Interference Intel Ahead of 2020 Vote”
Newly released internal emails appear to show that the FBI suppressed China election interference intelligence in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, prioritizing public image over national security, according to Senator Chuck Grassley.
The documents, made public Tuesday, include 47 pages of partially redacted emails and a letter from FBI Assistant Director Marshall Yates. They reveal that bureau leadership recalled a 2020 intelligence report warning that the Chinese Communist Party was preparing to create fake U.S. driver’s licenses to produce fraudulent mail-in ballots to benefit then-candidate Joe Biden. The intelligence was labeled unreliable—despite corroborating details—and ordered deleted before other agencies could evaluate it.
The reason? According to one internal email, the report would contradict Director Wray’s testimony to Congress that downplayed foreign threats to the election and dismissed the risks of mail-in ballot fraud.
“This smacks of political decision-making,” said Grassley. “The FBI suppressed China election interference warnings in order to shield Wray from criticism—not to protect Americans.”
The intelligence report was produced by the Albany Field Office in August 2020. After Wray’s testimony to Congress in mid-September, FBI leadership recalled the report, despite Albany analysts warning that suppressing the information for political reasons would be “dangerous.”
Even after reinterviewing the source and receiving additional supporting context, the FBI refused to reissue the report.
The explosive revelations come amid broader scrutiny of the FBI’s integrity and political neutrality. Former FBI leadership is now being accused by current officials—including Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino—of deliberately concealing foreign interference evidence to maintain political narratives.
As the U.S. prepares for another high-stakes election, Grassley argues the bureau must be rebuilt. “Director Patel’s commitment to transparency is essential,” he said.
The emails confirm what critics feared: the FBI suppressed China election interference intelligence, choosing optics over truth in a moment when the stakes couldn’t have been higher.
