“FBI examining COVID-19 origin ‘cover-up’ amid new strain emergence: Bongino”
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced Wednesday evening that the agency is actively reviewing matters related to the origin of COVID-19, including potential efforts to conceal information from the public. While Bongino did not confirm the existence of a formal investigation into a cover-up, his remarks mark one of the most explicit public acknowledgments to date of the FBI’s continued interest in the pandemic’s origins.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Bongino wrote: “As we read and process reports of a new COVID strain emerging, I want you to know that we are actively investigating, in multiple field offices, the cover-up of the origin of the COVID virus, along with associated matters requiring our attention. The American people deserve answers.”
The FBI has not issued a formal press release on the matter, and officials have not disclosed specific individuals, institutions, or events under scrutiny. The statement comes amid heightened public and political interest in a newly emerging COVID-19 variant, provisionally identified as NB.1.8.1, which has been detected in several U.S. states. Federal health agencies have not yet designated the variant as a concern.
Bongino’s statement follows past assertions from the bureau. In 2023, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray stated the agency had assessed with “moderate confidence” that the virus likely originated from a laboratory incident in Wuhan, China. Chinese officials have repeatedly rejected this theory, calling it politically motivated and lacking scientific support.
Bongino’s remarks also coincide with ongoing efforts by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, which is continuing its investigation into whether early public health messaging and intergovernmental communications suppressed discussion of the lab leak hypothesis for diplomatic or political reasons.
Former White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has faced repeated scrutiny from lawmakers and members of the public, has denied any involvement in a cover-up, describing such allegations as “entirely false.” Fauci recently testified before Congress, defending his handling of early pandemic data and communications.
Appointed as FBI Deputy Director earlier this year by Director Kash Patel, Bongino—a former NYPD officer and Secret Service agent—has increasingly utilized social media platforms to communicate directly with the public about the Bureau’s activities.
As of this report, the FBI has not responded to requests for comment from media outlets, and it remains unclear what timeline or scope the bureau’s review may entail.
