“Church Bombing in Damascus Highlights Ongoing Christian Persecution in Syria”

June 23, 2025 • by DailyClout

Christian persecution in Syria was tragically underscored on June 22 when a suicide bomber struck a Greek Orthodox church during Divine Liturgy in Damascus, killing over 20 people and injuring more than 60 others. The blast occurred inside Mar Elias Church, located in the Dweila neighborhood, and was reportedly carried out by a gunman affiliated with ISIS.

The attack marks one of the deadliest recent assaults against Christian civilians in the country and has drawn both domestic and international condemnation. According to Syria’s Interior Ministry, the assailant entered the church armed and wearing an explosive vest, opening fire before detonating the device. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and horror, with worshipers attempting to subdue the attacker before the explosion.

Father Fadi Ghattas confirmed that nearly 350 people were inside the church during the attack, and a second priest, Father Meletius Shahati, reported another gunman firing at the church entrance before the blast.

Images shared by responders showed the aftermath: mangled pews, blood-spattered walls, and a damaged altar. Civil defense personnel and investigators quickly secured the site, collecting evidence and attending to the injured.

Officials including Syria’s Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa denounced the bombing, affirming the government’s commitment to civil peace and national unity. He called the assault a “cowardly act” and stressed efforts to combat extremist violence.

The U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, expressed condolences on behalf of President Donald Trump and emphasized continued support for Syria’s efforts to restore stability. United Nations envoy Geir Pederson condemned the “heinous crime” and called for a full investigation.

This tragic event comes amid ongoing turmoil following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. Sectarian violence and political instability continue to plague the region. Maronite Archbishop Antoine Chbair recently warned that “no one knows the end” of the sectarian strife gripping Syria.

As churches, minority communities, and civilians continue to bear the brunt of violent extremism, the world is once again reminded of the urgent need to address Christian persecution in Syria and ensure lasting security for all faith communities.
