“Trump taps Waltz for UN ambassador, Rubio to take on national security adviser role”
In a significant shake-up of his national security team, former President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Congressman Mike Waltz will be nominated as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Waltz, a former Green Beret and current member of Congress from Florida, is stepping down from his position as National Security Advisor.
Simultaneously, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily assume the responsibilities of National Security Advisor, effectively holding both key foreign policy roles—an uncommon arrangement in recent U.S. history. Trump made the announcement via a statement posted on his Truth Social platform.
“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump wrote. “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress, and as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”
Trump added that Rubio would take on national security duties in addition to his ongoing work at the State Department: “In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN.”
The appointments reflect Trump’s confidence in both men and his broader approach to consolidating foreign policy leadership under trusted allies as he continues to shape his prospective administration ahead of the 2024 election.
