“Trump taps Jeanine Pirro for interim US attorney for DC”
President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has selected former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro to serve as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. The decision follows the withdrawal of Trump’s previous nominee, Ed Martin, whose confirmation prospects faced opposition from key Republican senators.
“Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position and is considered one of the top district attorneys in New York’s history,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
Pirro, a former county court judge and three-term Westchester County District Attorney, joined Fox News in 2006. Her departure from the network was confirmed Thursday by anchor Bret Baier.
Pirro is the latest addition to Trump’s administration with ties to Fox News. Other recent appointees include Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, all of whom previously worked for the network or its affiliates.
Ed Martin, who had served as the interim U.S. attorney, faced scrutiny over his involvement with organizations supporting January 6 defendants and his public statements challenging the 2020 election results. While Martin did not enter the Capitol during the January 6 events, his participation in the march and related activism prompted concerns from Senate Republicans. Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, publicly opposed Martin’s confirmation, significantly reducing his chances of approval.
Despite the withdrawal, Martin will remain in the administration. Trump announced that Martin will now serve as Director of the Weaponization Working Group, Associate Deputy Attorney General, and Pardon Attorney at the Department of Justice. According to Trump, Martin will focus on investigating alleged government overreach during the Biden administration.
Trump previously issued a pardon in January 2021 to Pirro’s former husband, Albert Pirro, who had been convicted in 2000 on conspiracy and tax evasion charges.
