“Trump Taps IBM’s Darío Gil for Energy’s Undersecretary for Science and Innovation”

Incoming President Donald Trump on Thursday selected Director of IBM Research Darío Gil as his nominee for undersecretary for science and innovation at the Department of Energy.
“Darío is a brilliant businessman and scientist, with a distinguished record as the Chairman of the National Science Board, and Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research,” Trump wrote in an announcement on Truth Social and reposted on X, formerly Twitter. “He previously served on the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology during my First Term.”
Gil’s work at IBM focused on emerging technologies, namely artificial intelligence and quantum information sciences. He has publicly spoken in support of open-source AI model weights, particularly in government research and work, serving on the first Trump administration’s President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and chairing one of its subcommittees, where he advocated for more U.S. investment in emerging and critical technologies.
