“Trump-backed Populist conservative Karol Nawrocki wins Poland’s presidential election”
Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian backed by Poland’s nationalist opposition and endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has won Poland’s presidential runoff election, according to official results released Monday. The outcome marks a potential shift in the nation’s political trajectory and was closely followed by observers in Europe and North America.
Though the Polish presidency is largely ceremonial compared to the prime minister’s office, the role includes important powers such as veto authority, making it a significant counterbalance within the government.
Nawrocki secured 50.89% of the vote in Sunday’s runoff, narrowly defeating Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, a member of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-European Civic Platform party, who received 49.11%. Nearly 37,000 votes separated the two candidates, out of 20.8 million ballots cast — representing a 71.6% voter turnout.
Nawrocki’s win comes after trailing Trzaskowski in the first round of voting on May 18. Running as an independent, Nawrocki was supported by the Law and Justice party (PiS), Poland’s main nationalist opposition force.
In a speech following his victory, Nawrocki emphasized the need to prevent Prime Minister Tusk’s administration from consolidating too much power. “We managed to unite the patriotic camp in Poland — everyone who wants a normal Poland, a Poland without illegal immigrants, a safe Poland,” he said, according to state broadcaster TVP World.
His campaign overcame several controversies, including past allegations of involvement in a 2009 football hooligan incident during his tenure at a state institute focused on investigating crimes from the Nazi and communist eras.
Internationally, Nawrocki’s campaign drew attention and support from several prominent conservative figures. U.S. President Donald Trump hosted him at the White House in early May. Days before the runoff, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem endorsed Nawrocki during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Poland, where she urged voters to reject Trzaskowski, labeling him “a socialist” and praising Nawrocki as a leader who could bring strength and freedom to the nation.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a vocal supporter of nationalist leaders in Central Europe, celebrated Nawrocki’s win as “a fantastic victory” and expressed hopes of deeper cooperation within the Visegrad Group — a regional alliance of Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also congratulated Nawrocki and expressed optimism for continued collaboration between Poland and the EU, stating, “We are all stronger together in our community of peace, democracy and values.”
Czech President Petr Pavel welcomed the outcome, saying he expected Poland to maintain its democratic and pro-Western course under Nawrocki’s leadership.
As Poland’s political landscape adjusts to this new chapter, Nawrocki’s presidency is expected to serve as a pivotal factor in the ongoing power dynamic between Poland’s executive branches and its broader role within the European Union.
