“Trump administration offers $1,000 to migrants who self-deport”

The Trump administration announced Monday a new initiative offering a $1,000 payment to certain migrants who voluntarily depart the United States using a government-managed mobile application.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the payment is intended to “facilitate travel back to their home country” and will be disbursed once departure is confirmed through the newly introduced CBP Home app.
Officials describe the policy as a cost-saving alternative to traditional enforcement methods. The DHS estimates the average cost of arresting, detaining, and removing a migrant exceeds $17,000 per individual. In contrast, voluntary departures, they argue, could reduce taxpayer expenses and administrative burden.
“Self-deportation is a dignified way to leave the U.S. and allows individuals to avoid direct enforcement actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” the DHS stated in a press release. Migrants who submit their intent to voluntarily depart via the CBP Home app may also be deprioritized for detention and removal efforts, provided they demonstrate credible progress toward exiting the country.
The app’s website notes that the federal government may assist in arranging travel and obtaining necessary documentation. Once approved, most participants are expected to leave the United States within approximately three weeks.
CBP Home is a reconfigured version of the Biden-era CBP One app, which was originally designed to allow migrants to schedule appointments at ports of entry to initiate asylum claims. The updated application is now focused on facilitating organized, voluntary departures.
“The CBP Home mobile app allows users to plan their return, offering time to resolve work, school, and personal matters prior to departure,” the agency’s website explains. The program is promoted as offering “flexibility, not fear,” in the context of President Trump’s stated intention to pursue a large-scale deportation operation.
During the first 100 days of the administration, officials reported over 135,000 deportations. This figure includes removals of Venezuelan and Salvadoran nationals, some of whom were transferred to facilities in El Salvador where they were reportedly unable to contest allegations of gang affiliation.
