Everything You Wanted To Know…Or Not…In The New Stimulus Bill
by Charlotte Walker January 7, 2021
The new stimulus bill, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 signed into law on December 27, 2020, is a massive 5,593 page document which bundles several bills and also combines $1.4 trillion of appropriations with the new stimulus of over $900 billion. The stimulus portion of the bill stays mostly true to a framework hammered out by the Problem Solvers Caucus, a bi-partisan group of legislators evenly comprised of Democrats and Republicans. If not for them, the Senate would likely still be dithering, in my opinion.
While thankfully addressing many critical needs with additional funding, the bill falls short of addressing the totality of financial difficulties brought on by the pandemic, and also lacks the reforms that would benefit small business, a critical driver of job growth and innovation, or infrastructure, also an important component to economic growth, making it more certain that yet another bill will be required in the 2021-2022 time frame to drive a robust recovery and net new job growth in the years ahead. Stay tuned.
