“Musk ‘Disappointed’ by Trump-Backed Spending Package”

Elon Musk voiced criticism this week over a major domestic policy bill recently passed by House Republicans and strongly supported by former President Donald Trump, expressing disappointment with the legislation’s projected impact on the federal deficit.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk, who earlier this year stepped back from overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said the spending package undermines the deficit-cutting efforts previously undertaken by his DOGE team.
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk said during the broadcast interview.
The legislation, titled the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, is a sweeping measure that proposes a variety of Republican policy priorities, including the extension of the 2017 Trump-era tax cuts, increased funding for border security, work requirements for Medicaid recipients, and the repeal of several clean energy tax incentives.
While the bill has passed the House, it still faces a vote in the Senate. According to a report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the bill’s tax provisions alone are projected to increase the federal deficit by $3.8 trillion by 2034.
“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful,” Musk remarked. “But I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion.”
Musk’s remarks highlight a rare public disagreement with Trump, who has aggressively promoted the legislation as a cornerstone of his renewed economic vision for the country. As CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk has maintained a high profile in both the private sector and, until recently, in government reform efforts.
His tenure at DOGE was marked by aggressive cost-cutting initiatives across federal agencies, earning both praise and criticism. While supporters credited the department with eliminating waste and streamlining operations, critics—both Democratic and Republican—raised concerns about the speed and breadth of the reforms, as well as ongoing legal disputes.
Though Musk has since reduced his direct involvement in federal policy, his commentary on economic and legislative developments continues to carry weight among policymakers and the public alike.
As debate continues in the Senate over the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” Musk’s comments may further influence discussions on fiscal responsibility, tax policy, and the long-term implications of federal spending.
