“Klaus Schwab Steps Down from World Economic Forum Leadership Role”

Klaus Schwab, founder and long-time executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), has officially stepped down from the organization’s board of trustees at the age of 87. His departure was confirmed in a WEF press release following an extraordinary board meeting held on April 20.
“Following my recent announcement, and as I enter my 88th year, I have decided to step down from the position of Chair and as a member of the Board of Trustees, with immediate effect,” Schwab told the board.
Schwab founded the WEF in 1971, and over the past five decades, the organization has become known for its annual Davos summit, which convenes global leaders in politics, business, and academia to discuss long-term economic, environmental, and societal trends. The WEF describes its mission as engaging “leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.”
The current board of trustees includes high-profile figures such as former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink. In a 2024 announcement, the WEF indicated Schwab would transition from Executive Chairman to Chairman of the Board by January 2025, though his resignation this month appears to accelerate that timeline.
This leadership shift comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of the WEF’s influence in shaping international policy frameworks, particularly around climate change, ESG standards, and digital governance.
President Donald Trump, who delivered remarks remotely to the 2025 Davos meeting, used the occasion to renew criticism of corporate censorship. Speaking directly to Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan, Trump remarked, “I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives… many complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business.”
The WEF has increasingly become a flashpoint in global political debate, with critics questioning the organization’s reach into national policy and private enterprise. Schwab’s departure marks the end of an era for the forum—and potentially a new chapter in its global agenda.
