Ireland Elects Self-Described Socialist President in Historic Landslide
Ireland has elected Catherine Connolly — a pro-immigration, self-described socialist who ran as an independent — to serve as the country’s next president in what is now the largest electoral margin in the office’s history.
Connolly, 68, took 63.4% of the national vote, handily defeating the nominees of both major establishment parties: Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys (29.5%) and Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin (7.2%). Though technically independent, Connolly was backed by Sinn Féin, Labour, and other left-leaning parties.
In a victory speech that repeatedly emphasized “inclusion” and demographic change, Connolly pledged to “shape a new republic … that values and champions diversity … and the new people that have come to our country.” She also positioned herself as a president who will advocate for neutrality in foreign policy, elevate climate change as an “existential” threat, and call for additional public resources to support these goals.
Connolly takes office November 11, succeeding longtime left-wing incumbent Michael D. Higgins. With her win, she surpasses the previous record for presidential vote share set in 1959 by Éamon de Valera — a central figure in the Irish War of Independence.
Observers note the election reflects both a consolidation of Ireland’s political left and a major endorsement of policies centered on immigration, diversity, neutrality, and expanded public provisioning — all in a country that, until recently, was considered socially conservative by European standards.
