The man accused of trying to attack President Donald Trump and senior administration officials at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been identified in multiple reports as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Authorities say Allen traveled across the country, checked into the Washington Hilton, and attempted to breach security during one of Washington’s most visible political-media events.

Allen is not being described as a known career criminal. Early reporting paints a stranger and, in some ways, more unsettling portrait: a highly educated man, reportedly with ties to Caltech and California State University, Dominguez Hills, who worked as a tutor or teacher and had also developed an independent video game called Bohrdom. Acquaintances described him as intelligent, gentle, and unassuming, making the alleged attack all the more jarring.

According to law enforcement accounts cited by AP and Reuters, Allen allegedly arrived armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. He is accused of rushing a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton before gunfire broke out. A Secret Service agent was shot but survived because of a protective vest. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other officials were evacuated unharmed.

The most disturbing window into Allen’s alleged motive appears to be a statement or manifesto reportedly sent to family members before the attack. The Washington Post reported that the writing indicated an intent to target people connected to Trump’s administration, though it did not necessarily name Trump directly. In it, Allen allegedly called himself the “Friendly Federal Assassin” and accused administration supporters of complicity in what he described as grave moral and political crimes.

Officials are still investigating whether Allen’s motive was primarily political, psychological, ideological, or some mixture of all three. Reuters reported that Trump described him as a “pretty sick guy,” while investigators are examining Allen’s writings, electronics, travel, family warnings, and personal history. Authorities currently believe he acted alone.

There are also serious questions about security. Reuters reported that the Washington Hilton said it was operating under Secret Service protocols coordinated with D.C. police and hotel security. Still, Allen allegedly managed to get close enough to create a deadly confrontation at an event attended by roughly 2,500 people, including the president and senior federal officials.

Allen is expected to face federal charges including assault on a federal officer and use of a firearm during a crime of violence. Additional charges could follow as investigators complete searches and interviews.

The emerging picture is not of a shadowy operative, at least not from what is publicly known so far. It is of a 31-year-old educated Californian who, according to authorities, crossed the country with weapons, left behind writings filled with grievance, and tried to turn a Washington dinner into a national trauma.
