Fetterman Turns on His Own Party Over Shutdown and Obamacare Failures

October 16, 2025 • by DailyClout

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is under fire from his own party after publicly admitting what Republicans have long argued — that Democrats are responsible for both the ongoing government shutdown and the collapse of key Obamacare subsidies.

In a rare moment of candor, Fetterman acknowledged that Democrats “want” the shutdown, a comment that sent shockwaves through Washington. His remarks were highlighted by Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters, who said in a statement Thursday, “After weeks of Democrats spreading lies to deflect blame, Sen. John Fetterman said the quiet part out loud: ‘Shutting down the government is really what the Democratic Party wants to do.’”

Admitting Obamacare’s Built-In Failure

According to Fetterman, the expiration of Obamacare subsidies — a key factor contributing to the shutdown stalemate — was intentional. “Fetterman even admitted that Obamacare subsidies were designed by the Democrats to expire,” Gruters said.

This admission, long dismissed by media allies and party strategists, confirms what critics have argued for years: the so-called Affordable Care Act contained structural flaws that would trigger crisis points requiring political bailouts. “Democrats caused this shutdown,” Gruters added. “They’re responsible for the expiration of their own policies, and now hardworking Americans are paying the price.”

Democrats Plot Against Their Own Senator

As Fetterman continues to distance himself from his party’s leadership, Democratic insiders are reportedly mobilizing to replace him in the next election cycle. According to Axios, several prominent Democrats are already positioning themselves for a 2028 Senate primary challenge, setting up an intraparty fight in one of America’s most critical swing states.

The reported challengers include Rep. Brendan Boyle, who’s branded Fetterman “Trump’s favorite Democrat”; Rep. Chris Deluzio, a populist rising star; and former Rep. Conor Lamb, who previously lost to Fetterman in 2022 but remains a favorite among progressive factions eager for a reset.

A Party Divided

The episode underscores the growing tension between Fetterman’s populist streak and his party’s progressive establishment. Once celebrated as a working-class Democrat, he’s now viewed by many in the party as unpredictable — even dangerous — for exposing internal contradictions around Obamacare, the shutdown, and federal spending.

For Republicans, Fetterman’s comments are a political gift. For Democrats, they’re a reminder that the fractures within the party may be deeper than anyone realized — and that the 2028 election could expose just how divided the Democratic base has become.
