Thune Accuses Democrats of Obstructing Trump Nominees

September 8, 2025 • by DailyClout

Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-SD) is ramping up pressure on Democrats over what he calls unprecedented obstruction of President Donald Trump’s nominees. According to Thune, Democrats have used procedural tactics to stall appointments across federal agencies, leaving critical posts unfilled and forcing Republicans to weigh more drastic measures.

“Democrats Have Stood in the Way at Every Turn”

In an op-ed, Thune charged that the minority party’s tactics go far beyond ordinary political sparring. He noted that the Trump administration was the first in history without a single nominee confirmed by voice vote or unanimous consent, a routine practice for noncontroversial picks in previous administrations.

Instead, Democrats have demanded lengthy roll-call votes even on widely supported nominees, slowing down confirmations for months. Thune described the strategy as “Trump derangement syndrome on steroids.”

A Costly Delay

The result, Thune argues, is a government hamstrung by vacancies. “It’s delay for delay’s sake, and it’s a pettiness that leaves desks sitting empty in agencies across the federal government and robs our duly elected president of a team to enact the agenda that the American people voted for in November,” he wrote.

Republicans contend that many of the stalled nominees eventually win bipartisan approval, underscoring how the drawn-out process is less about policy disputes and more about political gamesmanship.

The “Nuclear Option” on the Table

Frustrated by the backlog, Senate Republicans are now openly considering procedural changes — often dubbed the “nuclear option” — to speed confirmations. Thune framed the move as a last resort but insisted that Democrats have left the majority with little choice.

“Republicans aren’t going to tolerate this obstruction any longer,” he said. “We have tried to work with Democrats in good faith to batch bipartisan, noncontroversial nominees and clear them expeditiously, according to past precedent. Democrats have stood in the way at every turn.”

Why It Matters

Thune’s warning highlights how partisan gridlock is reshaping Senate traditions. The confirmation process, once seen as a routine duty of governance, has become another front in the broader war over Trump’s presidency. If Republicans move forward with rule changes, it would mark a sharp escalation — and a precedent that could outlast Trump’s tenure.
