“Trump Calls Putin ‘Absolutely Crazy’ Amid Escalating Ukraine Conflict”
In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, U.S. President Donald Trump condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for unleashing the largest aerial attack of the Ukraine war to date, calling him “absolutely CRAZY” and suggesting that further sanctions against Moscow are under consideration. Trump made the remarks in a post on Truth Social early Sunday as Ukrainian cities endured a third consecutive night of Russian drone and missile attacks.
According to Ukrainian defense officials, Russia launched an unprecedented 355 drones and nine cruise missiles overnight. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the attacks targeted at least five regions, including Khmelnytskyi in the west, home to a major military airbase. Civilian infrastructure was also hit, with reported damage to residential and industrial buildings, and a 14-year-old boy injured in Odesa. In the northern Zhytomyr region, Ukrainian authorities confirmed at least 12 fatalities, including three children.
“Something has happened to him (Putin). He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it… if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!”
Trump did not limit his criticism to Putin. In the same series of posts, he expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating, “Everything out of his mouth causes problems. I don’t like it, and it better stop.”
Speaking later to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump added, “I don’t know what’s wrong with [Putin]. What the hell happened to him? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that.” He indicated that new sanctions against Russia are being considered in response to the escalating violence.
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov brushed off Trump’s remarks, suggesting they were the product of heightened emotions. “This is a very crucial moment, associated with emotional overload of absolutely everyone,” Peskov told reporters, while also thanking the American people and Trump personally for what the Kremlin described as efforts toward peace negotiations.
Zelensky, while not responding directly to Trump’s rebuke, issued a statement on X criticizing the global community for “spending more effort on dialogue with Putin than on exerting real pressure.” He renewed calls for additional sanctions and argued that only “force” could restrain the Kremlin.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its strikes were focused on Ukraine’s Starokostiantyniv airbase in Khmelnytskyi and were retaliatory responses to recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian targets.
This latest exchange underscores the growing complexity of the nearly four-year conflict, as international pressure builds for a resolution but the fighting intensifies. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, expressed hope that Trump’s hardening stance might translate into concrete action—especially in the form of new economic sanctions.
While Trump continues to urge an end to the conflict, the gap between Russia and Ukraine remains wide. Peace talks have stalled, and both sides are locked in a deadly stalemate marked by technological warfare and mounting civilian casualties.
