UN Petition Challenges France’s Euthanasia Bill as Threat to Disabled Rights
A coalition led by the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ), supported by 14,304 signatories, has petitioned the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to intervene in France’s push to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide.
The petition, delivered on May 30, 2025, argues that the controversial “right to die” bill—recently adopted by France’s National Assembly—directly violates the rights of persons with disabilities. Advocates warn the legislation undermines France’s international obligations to protect vulnerable individuals from discrimination and coercion.
On June 23, 2025, the UN Committee confirmed it had “received credible information” that the bill’s approval would breach France’s duty to “respect, protect, and guarantee the right to life of persons with disabilities.” The Committee’s letter triggered a formal request for further information from the French government.
In response, the ECLJ submitted a detailed memorandum on August 1, outlining how the French government actively supported the bill despite its “most worrying effects” on disabled citizens. The memorandum also addressed each of the Committee’s concerns, highlighting the disproportionate risks to those who are already socially and medically vulnerable.
The petition calls for two urgent actions:

Remind France of its binding international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, urging lawmakers to reconsider the euthanasia proposal.

Launch a broader investigation into how disability rights are being respected—or violated—in countries that have already legalized euthanasia.
ECLJ representatives stress that this is not only a legal question but a moral one. “When the state begins to decide which lives are worth living, people with disabilities are always at the greatest risk,” a spokesperson said.
This petition to the United Nations could become a pivotal moment in the global debate over assisted suicide laws, forcing a reckoning over whether such policies can ever coexist with the duty to protect the rights of persons with disabilities.
