The Corporate Capture of Public Health
Originally published on BigLogic
Dr. Syed Haider said: “We have corporate capture of our entire government… There’s corruption at every level… Not to say that people are inherently corrupt… but the system itself is corrupt, and we’ve allowed corporations with their inherent biases to take over our medical system. And so we’re getting medicine which is, in many cases, harming us.” (Source – 53:10)
In a senate hearing regarding the U.S. government’s response to COVID-19, Dr. Piere Kory said: “United States health agency structures and policies created over the last 50 years have tightly intertwined the pharmaceutical industry with public health institutions, resulting in repeated policies placing pharmaceutical industry interests ahead of the welfare of U.S. citizens.” (Source – 36:46)

Health Regulatory Agencies Are Captured
NIH Receives Royalties From the Pfizer COVID Vaccine
Quotes below were excerpted from: https://fullmeasure.news/news/shows/conflicts-of-interest-02-23-2023
“NIH doles out $32 billion in federal grant-making to 56,000 entities. And that basically buys you the entire American healthcare space.”
Such tremendous influence gives NIH “the power to decide which scientists and projects get all those taxpayer billions” and therefore “buys you a lot of friends, buys you a lot of allies, and there’s great incentive to stay on the establishment narratives that NIH disseminates on public health policy.”
But could those policies be influenced by forces not related to public health?
A lawsuit by watchdog group Open The Books against the NIH “unearthed 3,000 pages of royalty payments to NIH scientists from 2010 to 2021. During that time, 2,407 government scientists received $325 million in secretive royalty payments, averaging out to more than $135,000 each.”
For example… “The NIH invented certain aspects of the vaccine that was licensed to Pfizer. When they developed it, they have to pay that royalty. And so… NIH was receiving tens of millions of dollars from Pfizer on those royalty payments.”
NIH Receives Royalties From the Moderna COVID Vaccine
https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/moderna-pays-us-government-400m-catch-payment-under-new-covid-19-vaccine-license
“In Moderna’s earnings release Thursday, the company said it recently paid the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) a $400 million “catch-up payment” under a new royalty-bearing license agreement between the parties.
The payment is part of a license agreement between Moderna and NIAID inked late last year. With the deal, Moderna is paying the U.S. government to access “certain patent rights concerning stabilizing prefusion coronavirus spike proteins,” Moderna Chief Financial Officer Jamie Mock said on a conference call Thursday.”
NIAID is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At the time this royalty agreement was struck, NIAID’s director was Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Health and Drug Regulators Are Not Independent From The Companies They Are Meant to Regulate
The British Medical Journal analyzed various health regulators’ budgets —particularly the portion focused on drugs — and discovered that, in each case, the majority is derived from the industry it is tasked to regulate…
• Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia – 96%
• European Medicines Agency (EMA) – 89%
• Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK – 86%
• Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) in Japan – 85%
• Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – 65%
• Health Canada (HC) – 50.5%
(Source: BMJ Investigation: Led astray? Industry’s influence on drug and device watchdogs – PDF | Webpage)
Excerpts from the report:
Sociologist Donald Light of Rowan University in New Jersey, who has spent decades studying drug regulation, said: “…a reliance on industry fees is contributing to a decline in evidentiary standards, ultimately harming patients.”
“…being largely funded by fees from the companies whose products it is charged to evaluate is a fundamental conflict of interest and a prime example of institutional corruption… Doctors and patients must appreciate how deeply and extensively drug regulators can’t be trusted so long as they are captured by industry funding.”
While historical drug disasters like sulfanilamide and thalidomide raised the stature of regulatory agencies, Light argues regulators now need their own watchdog and is calling for a drug and vaccine safety board, independent of the drug regulator, with the authority, staffing, and funds to investigate incidents of patient harm. “Countries have independent safety boards for airlines and their passengers. Why not for drugs and patients too?” says Light.

Conflicts of Interest in Medical Education
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK22945/
“Over recent decades, medical schools and teaching hospitals have become increasingly dependent on industry support of their core educational missions. Pharmaceutical Companies Run Their Own Safety Trials, Therefore Incentivizing Favorable Results
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01911-7
“Child psychiatrist Jon Jureidini and philosopher Leemon McHenry dispute the assumption that all approved drugs and medical devices are safe and effective. They warn that when clinical science is hitched to the pharmaceutical industry’s dash for profits, the scientific method is undermined by marketing spin and cherry-picking of data. They propose a solution inspired by philosopher of science Karl Popper: take drug testing out of the hands of manufacturers.”
The Illusion of Evidence Based Medicine
https://www.bmj.com/content/376/bmj.o702
“Medicine is largely dominated by a small number of very large pharmaceutical companies that compete for market share, but are effectively united in their efforts to expanding that market. The short term stimulus to biomedical research because of privatisation has been celebrated by free market champions, but the unintended, long term consequences for medicine have been severe. Scientific progress is thwarted by the ownership of data and knowledge because industry suppresses negative trial results, fails to report adverse events, and does not share raw data with the academic research community. Patients die because of the adverse impact of commercial interests on the research agenda, universities, and regulators.”
“The pharmaceutical industry’s responsibility to its shareholders means that priority must be given to their hierarchical power structures, product loyalty, and public relations propaganda over scientific integrity. Although universities have always been elite institutions prone to influence through endowments, they have long laid claim to being guardians of truth and the moral conscience of society. But in the face of inadequate government funding, they have adopted a neo-liberal market approach, actively seeking pharmaceutical funding on commercial terms. As a result, university departments become instruments of industry: through company control of the research agenda and ghostwriting of medical journal articles and continuing medical education, academics become agents for the promotion of commercial products.”
“Regulators receive funding from industry and use industry funded and performed trials to approve drugs, without in most cases seeing the raw data. What confidence do we have in a system in which drug companies are permitted to “mark their own homework” rather than having their products tested by independent experts as part of a public regulatory system? Unconcerned governments and captured regulators are unlikely to initiate necessary change to remove research from industry altogether and clean up publishing models that depend on reprint revenue, advertising, and sponsorship revenue.”
The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine: Exposing the Crisis of Credibility in Clinical Research
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/341990432_The_Illusion_of_Evidence-Based_Medicine_Exposing_the_Crisis_of_Credibility_in_Clinical_Research
“The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine provides a detailed account of these studies and argues that medicine desperately needs to re-evaluate its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. Without a basis for independent evaluation of the results of randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trials, there can be no confidence in evidence-based medicine. Science demands rigorous, critical examination and especially severe testing of hypotheses to function properly, but this is exactly what is lacking in academic medicine.”

Medical Journals and Pharmaceutical Companies: Uneasy Bedfellows
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1126057/
Richard Smith, Editor-in-Chief for the British Medical Journal for over a decade, said: “Many medical journals have a substantial income from pharmaceutical companies from the purchasing of advertising and reprints and the sponsoring of supplements… In one sense, all journals are bought—or at least cleverly used—by the pharmaceutical industry. The industry dominates health care, and most doctors have been wined and dined by it. It’s not surprising, therefore, that medical journals too should be heavily influenced by industry.”
Half of Published Research Likely to Be Completely False Due, In Part, to Conflicts of Interest
https://healthimpactnews.com/2015/how-conflicts-of-interest-have-corrupted-the-cdc/
“…Dr. Richard Horton, the current editor-in-chief of the Lancet… recently published a statement declaring that a lot of published research is in fact unreliable at best, if not completely false. ‘The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue. Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness…”
“Dr. Marcia Angell… makes her view of the subject quite plain: ‘It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on the judgment of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor of the New England Journal of Medicine.’”
The Highly Profitable But Unethical Business of Publishing Medical Research
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1557876/
“The model currently advocated is that authors pay for peer review and the posting of their article only if it is accepted. This seems to me to create an uncomfortable conflict of interest. Editors and publishers will be rewarded financially for accepting material.”
Research Reprints Are Huge Revenue Generators
British cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra said: “Many of these journals will receive sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars or pounds from drug companies when they publish their research to get reprints from the journal that they can then distribute amongst their drug reps to doctors. So this is basically part of their marketing materials. So there’s a huge financial conflict of interest.” (Source – 23:03)
Questions Raised Over Medical Journals’ Financial Ties to Industry

Written Evidence From Dr. Peter Wilmshurst to UK Parliamentary Science and Technology Research Integrity Committee
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9557939/
“In evidence submitted to the UK parliamentary science and technology review into research integrity committee in 2017 (Chaired by Sir Norman Lamb), Dr Peter Wilmshurst lists a number of risk factors that drive research misconduct in British institutions.”
Some of what Dr. Peter Wilmshurst said:
“Academic institutions bear responsibility for the pressure to publish for career advancement that can result in research misconduct.
A record of prominent publication is likely to attract future funding, which institutions demand, and good publicity, which institutions desire.
Other pressures for misconduct come from the association of academic institution with industry, such as when investigators or their institutions hold patents or shares, or they receive payments from industry, so that there is financial pressure to publish research that will be profitable for the company and to suppress ‘negative’ findings.
Some publications are simply organised criminal activities, which may be at the behest of sponsors, when prominent academics are paid large sums of money to publish false data by industry, or a sponsor may be one of the victims, when payments for conducting research are made to ‘investigators’, who simply fabricate data.
Medical journals have financial pressures to publish positive findings of research on drugs and medical devices, because their manufacturers buy reprints of the papers for distribution to doctors and they pay for advertisements linked to articles favourable to their product.
Academic institutions and journals depend on the public belief in the integrity of science, so they are unwilling to admit the seriousness and frequency of research misconduct.
To protect their reputations academic institutions conceal research misconduct, destroy evidence and silence whistle-blowers.
Journals are reluctant to admit that they published flawed research, so they commonly refuse to publish failures to replicate.
Fear of a libel action contributes to the failure to expose research misconduct.
Investigation of research misconduct may be difficult because there may be international collaboration between investigators, many of whom do not see the full data, and the resulting publications may be in journals that are published in countries where none of the investigators work.”

Hospitals Have an Incentive to Overcount COVID Cases
In an MSNBC interview Dr. Anthony Fauci acknowledged that hospitalizations among children were being overcounted, saying: “If you look at the children who are hospitalized, many of them are hospitalized with COVID as opposed to because of COVID. And what we mean by that… If a child goes in the hospital they automatically get tested for COVID and they get counted as a COVID hospitalized individual. When, in fact, they may go in for a broken leg or appendicitis or something like that. So it’s overcounting.”
There was also an acknowledgment by a health official that at certain times during the pandemic COVID deaths were being overcounted. Dr. Ngozi Ezike of the Illinois Department of Public Health said on April 19, 2020: “Everyone who’s listed as a COVID death doesn’t mean that that was the cause of the death.” (Source)
In senate testimony, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield lended insight into possible motivations for such overcounting by reflecting on past experiences with other diseases: “We’ve seen this in other disease processes too… in the HIV epidemic somebody may have a heart attack but also have HIV. The hospital would prefer the DRG [diagnosis-related group] for HIV cause there’s greater reimbursement.” (Source)

Drug Companies’ Payments and Gifts Affect Physicians’ Prescribing. It’s Time to Turn Off the Spigot
https://www.statnews.com/2020/12/04/drug-companies-payments-gifts-affect-physician-prescribing/
“Each year, about half of all U.S. doctors accept money or gifts from drug and device companies, totaling more than $2 billion. These payments range from free meals during which doctors listen to drug reps pitch their latest products, to travel to luxury locales to serve as paid ‘consultants’… 36 studies showed that receiving industry money increases prescribing. This was consistent across all medical specialties and types of drugs. Industry money affects how doctors prescribe…”
“These money-fueled nudges harm patients. Accepting industry money leads doctors to prescribe expensive, worthless drugs. It leads them to choose drugs with more severe side effects when treating leukemia. It causes them to deviate from prescribing guidelines. And the increased opioid prescribing resulting from payments leads to increased deaths from opioid overdoses.”

https://tidsskriftet.no/en/2015/06/where-sun-never-shines
“The problem is not a moral, but a practical one, as noted by Fiona Godlee in the BMJ. There are many good reasons for doctors and pharmaceutical companies to collaborate, and receiving money is not equivalent to ‘having sold out to the industry’. The point, however, is a simple one: there is no such thing as a free lunch. The pharmaceutical companies are not charitable organisations, they are commercial enterprises with a legitimate need to exert influence.”

“Over the past decade, the world’s richest man has become the World Health Organization’s second biggest donor, second only to the United States.”
“The Gates Foundation has pumped more than $2.4 billion into the WHO since 2000.”
“This largesse gives him outsized influence over its agenda…”
“The result, say his critics, is that Gates’ priorities have become the WHO’s. Rather than focusing on strengthening health care in poor countries — that would help, in their view, to contain future outbreaks like the Ebola epidemic — the agency spends a disproportionate amount of its resources on projects with the measurable outcomes Gates prefers, such as the effort to eradicate polio.”
“Concerns about the software billionaire’s sway — roughly a quarter of WHO’s budget goes toward polio eradication — has led to an effort to rein him in.”
“…his sway has NGOs and academics worried. Some health advocates fear that because the Gates Foundation’s money comes from investments in big business, it could serve as a Trojan horse for corporate interests to undermine WHO’s role in setting standards and shaping health policies.”

“As philanthropists increasingly fill in the funding gaps at news organizations—a role that is almost certain to expand in the media downturn following the coronavirus pandemic—an underexamined worry is how this will affect the ways newsrooms report on their benefactors. Nowhere does this concern loom larger than with the Gates Foundation, a leading donor to newsrooms and a frequent subject of favorable news coverage… I recently examined nearly twenty thousand charitable grants the Gates Foundation had made through the end of June and found more than $250 million going toward journalism. Recipients included news operations like the BBC, NBC, Al Jazeera, ProPublica, National Journal, The Guardian, Univision, Medium, the Financial Times, The Atlantic, the Texas Tribune, Gannett, Washington Monthly, Le Monde, and the Center for Investigative Reporting; charitable organizations affiliated with news outlets, like BBC Media Action and the New York Times’ Neediest Cases Fund; media companies such as Participant, whose documentary Waiting for ‘Superman’ supports Gates’s agenda on charter schools; journalistic organizations such as the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, the National Press Foundation, and the International Center for Journalists; and a variety of other groups creating news content or working on journalism, such as the Leo Burnett Company, an ad agency that Gates commissioned to create a ‘news site’ to promote the success of aid groups. In some cases, recipients say they distributed part of the funding as subgrants to other journalistic organizations—which makes it difficult to see the full picture of Gates’s funding into the fourth estate.”
The Federal Government Paid Hundreds of Media Companies to Promote COVID-19 Vaccines
HHS states on their website: “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) COVID-19 Public Education Campaign is a national initiative to increase public confidence in and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines while reinforcing basic prevention measures.” The campaign included “comprehensive vaccine confidence ads created for multiple platforms (radio, TV, social, digital, print, out-of-home).”
According to TheBlaze.com: “In response to a FOIA request filed by TheBlaze, HHS revealed that it purchased advertising from major news networks including ABC, CBS, and NBC, as well as cable TV news stations Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, legacy media publications including the New York Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post, digital media companies like BuzzFeed News and Newsmax, and hundreds of local newspapers and TV stations.”

“In 2020, Pfizer spent approximately $1.8 billion in advertising, down almost $600 million from its 2019 outlay ($1.9 billion). The year 2019 was itself a down year, as Pfizer had spent $2.28 billion on advertising in 2018, a year where the company was the highest-spending Big Pharma advertiser. Going all the way back to 2009, Pfizer’s annual advertising expenditure was already in the $2 billion range.”

Google, Facebook and Other Tech Companies Have Pharmaceutical Interests
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9628345/
“The tech information companies also have strong interests in controlling the discourse regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, in June 2021, it was revealed that Google, which was accused of silencing the theory the SARS-CoV-2 virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, has funded virus research carried out by a Wuhan-linked scientist, Peter Daszak, through its charity arm, Google.org, for over a decade. Google has also invested one million dollars in a company that uses epidemiologists and big-data analytics to forecast and track disease outbreaks. The British Medical Journal has revealed that Facebook and YouTube’s ‘fact-checking’ process relies on partnerships with third-party fact-checkers, convened under the umbrella of the International Fact-Checking Network (Clarke 2021). This organization is run by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a non-profit journalism school whose main financial supporters include Google and Facebook.”

Larry Sanger, 53, co-founded Wikipedia in 2001 alongside Jimmy Wales, said the crowdsourcing project has betrayed its original mission by reflecting the views of the ‘establishment.’”
Many Public Schools Are Captured
The U.S. Government Distributes $122 Billion to Elementary and Secondary Schools Across the Country to Encourage Following CDC’s Guidelines Regarding Masking, Social Distancing, Contact Tracing, Quarantining, Testing and Vaccinations
“On Thursday, March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act was signed into law. It was an unprecedented $1.9 trillion package of assistance measures, including $122 billion for the ARP Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) Fund. Funds are provided to SEAs [State Educational Agencies] and LEAs [Local Educational Agencies] to help safely reopen and sustain the same operation of schools and address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Nation’s students.” (Source)
“The Department released resources on how schools can address transportation issues, implement COVID-19 testing protocols and encourage vaccinations.” (Source)
“…the requirement clarifies that an LEA’s plan must include how it will maintain the health and safety of students, educators, and other school and LEA staff, and the extent to which it has adopted policies, and a description of any such policies, on each of the CDC’s safety recommendations including: Universal and correct wearing of masks; modifying facilities to allow for physical distancing (e.g., use of cohorts/podding); handwashing and respiratory etiquette; cleaning and maintaining healthy facilities, including improving ventilation; contact tracing in combination with isolation and quarantine, in collaboration with the State, local, territorial, or Tribal health departments; diagnostic and screening testing; efforts to provide vaccinations to school communities; appropriate accommodations for children with disabilities with respect to health and safety policies; and coordination with State and local health officials.” (Source)

Some Fact Checkers Are Captured
Facebook Fact Checkers in Collusion With Vaccine Maker?
https://www.thebiglogic.com/wp-content/uploads/Can-You-Really-Trust-Vaccine-Fact-Checkers-Joseph-Mercola.pdf
“Have you ever wondered who is behind Facebook’s fact checks? FactCheck.org is funded, in part, by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which holds nearly $2 billion in Johnson & Johnson stock. ‘Bless your heart if you think factcheck.org is an unbiased source of vaccine information,’ U.S. [Rep. Thomas] Massie tweeted.”
“According to FactCheck.org, they began a ‘SciCheck’ feature in 2015 that was intended to ‘increase public knowledge and understanding of science and scientific research.’ In December 2021, they launched SciCheck’s COVID-19/Vaccination Project, which, they state, aims ‘to increase exposure to accurate information about COVID-19 and vaccines, while decreasing the impact of misinformation.’”
“Conveniently, SciCheck’s COVID-19/Vaccination Project was made possible by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which not only holds billions of Johnson & Johnson stock but was founded by the late Robert Wood Johnson II — Johnson & Johnson’s president from 1932 to 1963. What’s more, its CEO, Richard Besser, is a former (2009) director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
“FactCheck.org states, ‘The foundation has no control over our editorial decisions,’ but Facebook’s ‘independent’ arbiters are profiting from the vaccines. ‘Who pays the paychecks of the fact-checkers?’ Massie tweeted, again pointing out the glaring conflict that ‘The vaccine fact-checkers at [factcheck.org], who claim to be independent, are funded by an organization that holds over $1.8 billion of stock in a vaccine company, and is run by a former director of [the CDC].’”
