Emergency Call-in for Griffith Park Ponies
Dear Naomi,Â
Here is your chance to speak up for the ponies who are suffering so terribly at the pony rides in Griffith Park. We need everyone to call on their behalf tomorrow when Recreation and Parks will be discussing the third-party equine veterinarian findings that, among other things, indicate the ponies haven’t received proper dental care and have been working with saddle sores. Â
Speak up
You will be able to speak during public comment by calling in this Thursday at 8:30 am PST. The owner is rallying folks and we need just as many people or more to speak up for the ponies.
This issue has garnered national attention. We must ensure that the Commissioners for Recreation and Parks understand fully that the unkind treatment towards horses in Los Angeles doesn’t align with our values. Los Angeles has already banned fur, wild animals for entertainment, and the bull hook. Pony Rides are no different than the circus, where animals are forced to work against their will. For the past five years the ponies at Griffith Park have languished in the heat, cold, and rain. The time to end this abuse is now.
The operator claims that he is passing all of his inspection reports, however we have clear footage of animal abuse and neglect, and still allowing a pony with gait issues to perform rides.
Please call in with a 2 minute speech, and express your concerns politely to Recreation and Parks Commissioners:
- Â Teaching our children kindness towards animals does not occur at this park. We are teaching future generations that violence towards animals is okay. When children are unkind to animals they will certainly be unkind to humans.
- Â Griffith Park and Pony Ride does not meet basic standards of care for equines.Â
- Â Equine experts have confirmed that the ponies are depressed.
WHAT TO ASK FOR
Please do not renew the contract for Griffith Park and Pony Ride, allow the animals to be sent to a sanctuary, and replace this ride with a non-animal model so that we can ensure that our children are safe, and that our animals are treated with the decency and respect that they deserve.
