CPB to Shut Down After Federal Funding Cut
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced Friday that it will begin shutting down after its federal funding was eliminated by the Trump administration and Congress. The CPB shutdown marks the first time in over 50 years that public broadcasting has been left without federal support.
Founded in 1967 as a private nonprofit, the CPB has distributed funds to more than 1,500 local public radio and television stations, as well as PBS and NPR. President Trump’s May executive order ended federal funding for public media, followed by a June House vote to claw back $1.1 billion in previously allocated funds. The Senate Appropriations Committee’s 2026 spending bill finalized the CPB funding cut.
“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations,” said CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison. Most CPB staff positions will end when the fiscal year closes on September 30, 2025, with a small transition team remaining through January 2026 to oversee the shutdown.
The CPB shutdown has sparked concern from PBS and NPR leaders, who warn the funding cut could devastate rural stations, many of which rely on CPB for over half their budget. NPR President Katherine Maher emphasized that local public media plays a critical role in emergency alerts for storms, floods, and wildfires in nearly half of U.S. states.
The loss of CPB support could lead to station closures, layoffs, and reduced emergency broadcasting capacity, particularly in rural America. Both PBS and NPR have faced Republican criticism for alleged bias, but have defended their role in public safety and community service.
