Court Refuses To Deport Eritrean Rapist
A Swedish court refuses to deport rapist Yazied Mohamed, an Eritrean refugee convicted of sexually assaulting 16-year-old Meya Åberg, ruling that the rape “did not last long enough” to constitute an “exceptionally serious crime” that would justify removal from the country. Mohamed, now 18, assaulted Åberg in a pedestrian tunnel on Sept. 1, 2024, as she walked home from work after missing a bus.
Although Mohamed received a three-year prison sentence, the Alto Norrland Court of Appeals rejected deportation, declaring that while rape is often grounds for expulsion of a refugee, this incident’s “nature and duration” did not meet the threshold for an expulsion order.
The decision ignited public fury across Sweden and abroad, as critics argue that when a Swedish court refuses to deport rapist offenders, it signals impunity for violent crimes committed by recent arrivals.
The ruling comes amid a series of migrant-linked sexual assaults and riots that have already strained the country’s immigration consensus.
Opponents say that refusing to deport violent offenders signals that the legal system prioritizes the offender’s immigration status over victim safety — a narrative likely to intensify debate over Sweden’s asylum and removal policies.
