“Arson at the Governor’s Mansion: Who Is Cody Allen Balmer?”

Cody Allen Balmer, 38, has been arrested and charged in connection with an arson attack on the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The incident occurred early Sunday morning while the governor and his family were present inside the home.
Balmer faces multiple charges, including attempted homicide, aggravated arson, and terrorism. He was denied bail at his arraignment on Monday.
According to court documents and public records, Balmer had experienced a series of personal and financial difficulties in recent years. He had been involved in ongoing foreclosure proceedings after falling behind on mortgage payments, and had previously disclosed to authorities that he faced challenges related to a serious car accident, marital separation, and mental health struggles.
Balmer was due in court later this week on unrelated charges stemming from a domestic violence incident. In January 2023, local police responded to a call describing a physical altercation at his home. Court documents allege that Balmer assaulted members of his family, including his wife and children, during what he described to officers as a suicide attempt. The criminal complaint details multiple injuries, including an account of Balmer stepping on his son’s broken leg and striking his wife and children. He was released on $5,000 unsecured bail, which did not require upfront payment.
Balmer also has a prior conviction for forgery, for which he received 18 months’ probation. His estranged wife’s aunt told ABC News she was surprised by the recent allegations, describing Balmer as quiet and seemingly reserved during their limited interactions.
Professionally, Balmer had worked as an auto mechanic in the Harrisburg area and served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 2004 to 2012 as a construction equipment repairer. He left the service at the rank of sergeant. The Army did not disclose his discharge status, citing privacy laws.
Social media activity attributed to Balmer is under review by law enforcement. Posts reviewed by ABC News reflect frustration with the U.S. economy, political dissatisfaction with both major parties, and one post from 2022 displaying an image of a Molotov cocktail embroidered with the phrase, “Be the light you want to see in the world.”
The investigation into the arson incident is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about a possible motive. The Shapiro family was unharmed in the attack.
