Anti-ICE Teacher Suggests Protesters Could Be Armed
An anti-ICE teacher endorses armed protest in Los Angeles after a violent clash between federal agents and an illegal immigrant left two people hospitalized. Ron Gochez — a Los Angeles high school teacher and spokesperson for the activist group Unión del Barrio — told reporters that ICE agents “are not the only ones with guns” and that residents “have every right to defend themselves.”
Gochez, who teaches at Maya Angelou Community High School and previously received a “Human Rights Award” from the California Teachers Association, spoke at a Tuesday press conference attacking ICE operations in South Central LA. His comments came just hours after federal agents shot 44-year-old Carlitos Ricardo Parias — a Mexican national who allegedly rammed immigration enforcement vehicles — injuring both Parias and a deputy U.S. marshal.
“We’re in South Central Los Angeles,” Gochez said. “They [ICE] are not the only ones with guns in this city… the people have every right to defend themselves against masked, unidentified gunmen.” He insisted that such armed resistance was “not violent” but “intelligent.”
Unión del Barrio, where the anti-ICE teacher endorses armed protest as a spokesperson, has led “Community Self-Defense Coalition” trainings designed to obstruct ICE operations by surveilling neighborhoods, disrupting raids, and mobilizing rapid-response activists. The group has reportedly interfered with multiple federal actions across California.
