Treasury Investigates Alleged Funnel of Minnesota Funds to Somali Terror Group
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that his department is investigating allegations that the Somali terror group al Shabaab may have received Minnesota welfare funds.
“At my direction, @USTreasury is investigating allegations that under the feckless mismanagement of the Biden Administration and Governor Tim Walz, hardworking Minnesotans’ tax dollars may have been diverted to the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab,” Bessent wrote on X Monday.
“Thanks to the leadership of @POTUS @realDonaldTrump, we are acting fast to ensure Americans’ taxes are not funding acts of global terror. We will share our findings as our investigation continues.”
Bessent reposted a recent City Journal article claiming that millions of dollars from Minnesota welfare programs had “ultimately landed in the hands of the terror group Al-Shabaab,” citing unnamed law enforcement sources, according to CBS News.
Gov. Tim Walz’s office pointed reporters to his comments last week, in which he said he welcomed an investigation into where defrauded welfare money may have gone and would cooperate fully.
A 2019 report from Minnesota’s Office of the Legislative Auditor said it was “unable to substantiate” claims that Child Care Assistance Program funds were reaching terrorist organizations, though it acknowledged it was “possible” that state money sent overseas could ultimately end up in the hands of extremists.
