Memphis Crime Collapses After Federal Crackdown
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Monday that violent crime in Memphis has fallen sharply since the federal-state Memphis Safe Task Force began its intensified operations in late September. Officials report that the task force has made more than 3,000 arrests in just two months, including more than 300 confirmed gang members. More than 500 illegal firearms have been seized, and federal charges have been filed against over 150 suspects. Law enforcement also recovered more than 120 missing or endangered children.
Updated crime data shows that Memphis is experiencing its lowest overall crime levels in 25 years. Murder is now at a six-year low, aggravated assault at a five-year low, and sexual assault at its lowest point in two decades. State and federal leaders credit the coordinated effort between local police, U.S. Marshals, federal agencies, and the National Guard for what they describe as “historic, measurable progress.”
Gov. Bill Lee praised the partnership and said President Trump committed the full weight of federal resources to Memphis, adding that the results are “unfolding before our eyes.” Sen. Marsha Blackburn said the ultimate goal is to make Memphis “the safest city in the United States,” calling the early results a promising sign.
The operation is not without controversy. Critics, including some community advocates, argue that while major violent crime categories are down, the surge in traffic stops, drug possession cases, and arrests for non-violent offenses raises concerns about racial profiling, over-policing in majority-Black neighborhoods, and increased pressure on jails and courts. Local facilities have already faced overcrowding, prompting inmate transfers to other counties and discussions about night and weekend court sessions.
Bondi emphasized that the effort is open to any mayor or governor who requests help. “This is about keeping Americans safe,” she said. “Party affiliation does not matter when families are afraid to walk to the grocery store.”
Discussions are already underway about expanding similar operations to other cities facing rising crime or gang-related violence.
