RNC Fights New Jersey for Voter Roll Transparency
The Republican National Committee has filed suit against the state of New Jersey, arguing that officials have refused to release public records related to voter roll maintenance. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters says the state has ignored eighteen separate requests for documents that should be accessible under federal law.
“New Jerseyans deserve to know whether their voter rolls are accurate,” Gruters told reporters. “Clean and transparent voter lists are essential for trust in our elections. The RNC is suing to obtain these records and ensure the state follows the law.”
The lawsuit targets New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way. The RNC says her office has repeatedly declined to provide information about how the state updates its voter rolls, including records of voters who have moved or requested removal.
Under Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, states must maintain accurate voter lists and allow the public to inspect the records that show how those lists are kept up to date. This includes removing voters who have died or relocated.
An RNC official says the committee is using litigation to support President Donald Trump’s broader efforts to strengthen election security. Earlier this year, the RNC sent similar records requests to officials in forty-eight states and the District of Columbia.
The push comes after Trump signed an executive order requiring states to verify proof of citizenship for federal voter registration, set a uniform Election Day ballot deadline, and condition federal election funding on compliance with these requirements.
While the executive order establishes national standards, the RNC says it is pursuing a state-by-state strategy to ensure compliance and to give voters a clear view of how their states manage election rolls.
