CDC Workforce Cuts Confirmed

The CDC workforce cuts confirmed highlights a significant federal downsizing. According to the Associated Press and Reuters, around 600 CDC employees received final termination notices this week—part of a larger HHS restructuring announced in March that aims to reduce staff and refocus the agency on epidemic response.

These cuts are a continuation of a sweeping downsizing that includes the transition of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) into the CDC and a total reduction of approximately 1,400 positions at the CDC—factoring in ASPR transfers.

Not all departments were impacted equally. A federal judge issued protections for certain units—like those handling reproductive health, environmental health, and birth defects—but divisions such as violence prevention and FOIA remain exposed, with approximately 100 staff from violence prevention notified of termination.

Why It Matters

These terminations come amid heightened tensions following a recent shooting at the CDC campus, where a police officer was killed. The layoffs only added to staff concerns about safety and organizational direction under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
