Trump Orders New Census: Illegal Immigrants Will Not Be Counted
President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has directed the Commerce Department to initiate a new U.S. census—this time excluding illegal immigrants from the official count.
“I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures,” Trump posted to Truth Social, “People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS.”
This declaration comes amid renewed scrutiny over how population numbers impact congressional apportionment and electoral votes. The official U.S. census, conducted every ten years, determines how House seats and electoral college votes are distributed across states. Including noncitizens in the count, Trump argues, unfairly boosts representation in Democrat-leaning states.
The move could reignite legal challenges. The U.S. Census Bureau currently includes unauthorized immigrants in its population figures, citing constitutional obligations to count all residents. The 14th Amendment mandates counting the “whole number of persons,” a phrase long debated in redistricting battles.
Trump’s earlier attempt to exclude illegal immigrants from the 2020 census was blocked after a Supreme Court case was dismissed as too speculative. President Biden reversed Trump’s 2020 order upon taking office. Trump has since revoked Biden’s reversal.
With Trump now reasserting control, the census may once again become a central flashpoint in America’s immigration and electoral integrity debates.
