President Donald Trump visited the Federal Reserve on Thursday, marking a rare presidential appearance at the central bank’s Washington headquarters. But the moment quickly became tense when Trump and Fed Chair Jerome Powell clashed over the true cost of an ongoing renovation project.
The Trump Fed renovation confrontation unfolded as Trump claimed the project’s cost had ballooned to $3.1 billion — well beyond the originally approved $1.9 billion budget. Holding a document, Trump said, “So we’re taking a look, and it looks like it’s about 3.1 billion. Went up a little bit — or a lot.”
Powell disagreed on camera, stating, “I haven’t heard that from anybody at the Fed,” and clarified that the added costs Trump referred to were for a separate building completed five years ago.
The Trump Fed renovation issue has become a new pressure point as Trump urges the central bank to slash interest rates amid inflation concerns. While Powell has held rates steady, Trump continues to call him “too late” and has even threatened his removal.
Despite the disagreement, Trump later tried to downplay the moment. “I thought we had a good meeting. No, there was no tension,” he told reporters, though his earlier remarks hinted otherwise.
The Trump Fed renovation visit was historic — no president had visited the Fed since 2006. But critics see Trump’s scrutiny of the project as another tactic to undermine Powell’s leadership, particularly as rate cuts remain off the table due to persistent inflation.
Powell maintains that the cost overruns stem from necessary safety upgrades, inflation, and structural challenges — not mismanagement. Legal experts say even if Trump attempts to use the renovation as grounds for removal, it likely wouldn’t hold up in court.
With consumer prices rising 2.7% year-over-year, the Fed is unlikely to budge on rates this month, regardless of Trump’s escalating public pressure.
