Trump to Federalize D.C. After Brutal Assault
President Donald Trump is calling for sweeping law enforcement changes in Washington, D.C., after Edward Coristine—better known online as “Big Balls”—was brutally beaten during an attempted carjacking early Sunday morning.
Coristine, a 19-year-old former DOGE employee and current Social Security Administration staffer, reportedly intervened to stop a woman from being assaulted by a group of juveniles near Dupont Circle. He was severely beaten during the confrontation.
Trump posted about the incident Tuesday on Truth Social, sharing a graphic photo of the bloodied teenager and declaring that crime is “out of control” in the nation’s capital. He blamed “local youths” and gang members, claiming that lax prosecution of juveniles has created a lawless environment.
“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take federal control of the city,” Trump wrote. “The law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these ‘minors’ as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14.”
The threat to federalize D.C. comes despite a reported 35% drop in violent crime in 2024. Nevertheless, Trump insists that symbolic cases like Coristine’s justify drastic action. The call to Trump federalize D.C. has since ignited debate over youth crime and local governance.
Elon Musk also weighed in on X, confirming that a member of the DOGE team had intervened during the carjacking attempt and was hospitalized with a concussion after saving the woman.
“It is time to federalize D.C.,” Musk declared.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Coristine and the unnamed woman were approached near the 1400 block of Swann Street at around 3 a.m. by a group of juveniles demanding their car. When they resisted, the suspects physically assaulted Coristine and stole his iPhone 16.
Two 15-year-old suspects from Hyattsville, Maryland—one male and one female—were arrested and charged with unarmed carjacking. The rest fled when an MPD cruiser arrived.
Marko Elez, a former DOGE colleague, said he took the widely circulated photo of Coristine. “My friend Big Balls is a hero,” Elez posted. “Violence like this in the heart of D.C. is completely unacceptable.”
Coristine, who reportedly changed his LinkedIn name to “Big Balls” to catch Musk’s attention, left DOGE after Musk’s departure from government and began working at the Social Security Administration in a tech-focused role.
While Trump did not name Coristine directly in his post, multiple reports and confirmations from friends and officials have since identified him as the assault victim.
The push to see Trump federalize D.C. is now gaining steam among his supporters, many of whom argue that local officials have lost control of the city.
