How Medicine is Losing its Soul: A Letter to the Medical Profession
Dear Medical Professionals,
What, on earth, has come over you? I am deeply disappointed in your apathy and utter disregard for human life. How can you continue to hide in the shadows – only to tremble and quake about speaking out? How is it that you are not standing up for what is right in delivering the best possible care to patients who see you as the last bastion of hope to help them through their darkest hours?
I am a retired RN with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. I also have another Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in another field. I worked professionally in nursing for over 40 years. If I ever had a question about any medication that was new to the market, I always looked it up in the PDR (physician’s desk reference) or the accompanying package insert to see the contraindications; side effects, etc. of the medication. I would also call the hospital pharmacist. If I still did not feel right about giving it, then I would call the prescribing doctor and explain my concerns. Sometimes, depending on the situation, we would hold the medicine until further notice.
I got the package insert for the Moderna shot from a neighborhood pharmacy. It was folded up neatly inside of the box. When I opened up the insert – it was about the size of a large calendar. I was shocked when it said – “Left Intentionally Blank” in big, boldfaced letters. And it was BLANK! If I were still working in the field, I would have never given said injection without knowing what it contains
“Left Intentionally Blank” tells me right off that I would be subjecting my license by injecting someone with unknown ingredients.
When I spoke briefly with an RN who worked in one of those Urgent Care Centers her response was, “I’m not going to argue with you about no […] shot!”
Why did she get so hostile and defensive with me when I asked her if she knew what was in it? I cannot speak for her, but I guess she thought like the rest of the ones giving the shot:
“I’m just following orders – it must be OK.”
In addition, the doctors that are hiding in the high grass may be doing so for the same reason: “I’m just following orders from the administration.” What a cop-out! We know that you fear losing everything that you have worked for all your life – but what about the Golden Rule in medicine? Do No Harm! As far as I am concerned, I distrust modern medicine with anything that they are trying to sell nowadays, with few exceptions.
According to a Gallup Poll, December of 2018, nurses ranked number one as the most trusted professions and doctors second. So where is the medical profession now, I wonder? If they keep on pushing these jabs like there is no tomorrow, I would say they are lower than low. I know a lot of you are sitting on the fence about what to do but I say, make a decision. Now. Sooner rather than later. Put an immediate halt to “just following orders,” and stand up for what you know in your heart of hearts is right. When all of the doctors and nurses stand up and “Just say no,” the greedy system collapses.
Modern Medicine – Heal Thyself.
Be courageous. Do not enable a corrupt system. Stand up and be counted. Look at the nurses that the hospitals fired over “the shot” because they refused to take it to keep their jobs, only to have the hospitals call them, begging them to come back because the facility couldn’t fulfill its obligation to the community by providing quality medical care with such few staff members.
To those medical professionals who work in critical care – why are you being dictated to by a hospital administration who only cares about their bottom-line and profit margin? Why are you still enforcing protocols that are costing lives, knowing that there are other off-label medications that are saving lives in other treatment facilities? Shame on you. Do not think you are exempt from criminal negligence and malpractice because you are all under the CARES Act or because the holier-than-thou organization has your back. You don’t know when this is going to implode.
What happened to your morals and advocacy for the patients?
I know many good doctors and nurses have left. I say ‘hoorah’ for them. They were brave enough to stand on their own two feet. They made that difficult resolution. They have moved on to other things. Why do some of you stay only “to go along to get along”? Especially when all is being exposed at such a rapid rate. Wake up and smell the coffee. I know that this is easier said than done, but is this the world we want to live in? Men and women going to a hospital for help only to be treated inhumanely?
I just pray for all of the good professionals who are on the fence about choosing a side.
Feel the fear but do it anyway.
I guarantee, you that you will sleep better at night knowing that you made the right decision. As George Bernard Shaw once wrote, “All professions are conspiracies against the laity.” (From the Doctors Dilemma – 1906). I have a knee-jerk reaction to this truth. Remember what Hippocrates wrote, “Where ever the art of medicine is loved – there is also love of humanity.”
It’s up to you. Are you politicians or healers?
Please do not let medicine lose its soul.
It is high time to “grab your pitchforks and storm the castle.” Isn’t it?
And by the way, congratulations to the Arizona Board of Nursing who didn’t revoke Jodi O’Malley’s RN license for doing the right thing. Jodi is an inspiration to all!
Sincerely,
A Retired RN
Well expressed! Bravo to the author!
Bravo! I’m not a nurse but I worked in medicine for forty years. I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening now and I went through the very beginning of the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco.
