Democrats Revolt: Calls Mount for Chuck Schumer to Step Down After Shutdown Deal
A growing number of House and Senate Democrats are demanding that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer step down after several Senate Democrats broke with the party to advance a funding measure that could end the government shutdown.
“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,” Rep. Ro Khanna of California wrote on X, adding: “If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”
The government shutdown began on Oct. 1 because Democrats withheld support for funding bills in order to press for an extension of enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. While Senate Republicans signaled openness to debate and vote on the subsidies, they conditioned that support on the government being reopened.
The deal now poised to break the impasse is seen as a win for Republicans: it guarantees a future vote on the ACA subsidy extension, but separates that vote from the measure to reopen government, prompting criticism from Democrats who expected the subsidies to be secured upfront.
The fallout has turned into a leadership crisis for Schumer. Progressive House members, Senate hopefuls, and state-level Democratic leaders alike are using the breakdown as evidence that Schumer cannot hold the caucus together or deliver on key policy priorities like health-care affordability.
But some Democrats remain loyal. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries defended Schumer, saying the “overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats… have waged a valiant fight for the American people” and Clarked the defecting senators must answer to their constituents.
Why it matters:
-
This internal revolt signals a deeper fracture within the Democratic Party over tactics, leadership, and strategy heading into upcoming elections.
-
The deal in question raises major questions about health-care subsidies and the party’s ability to protect working-class Americans from premium hikes.
-
The week’s events show just how fragile majority leadership can be when policy, politics and intra-party discipline collide.
