Antifa Members Indicted for Terrorism in Texas ICE Facility Attack
A federal grand jury has indicted two Antifa members indicted for terrorism following a violent July 4 ambush on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Texas. The charges mark the first time the FBI has formally brought terrorism-related indictments against individuals aligned with the Antifa movement.
The indictment, unsealed Thursday, names Cameron Arnold and Zachary Evetts as the primary defendants in the attack on the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. Both face multiple felony counts, including providing material support for terrorism, attempted murder of federal and assisting officers, and discharging firearms during attempted murders.
FBI Director Kash Patel called the arrests “a landmark moment in the fight against anarchist violent extremism.” He stated, “For the first time ever, the FBI has arrested Antifa-aligned extremists and charged them with material support to terrorism. This was a planned and coordinated terrorist attack on federal officers — and it will not be tolerated.”
A Coordinated Ambush on July 4
According to the federal indictment, the defendants and their co-conspirators orchestrated a nighttime ambush at the detention center, using fireworks and graffiti to create chaos before opening fire on responding officers with semiautomatic rifles. One Alvarado police officer was struck in the neck but returned fire despite his injuries.
Witnesses and surveillance footage reportedly captured the moment when Arnold shouted, “Get to the rifles!” as law enforcement approached. Seconds later, gunfire erupted. The indictment states that Arnold continued firing until his weapon jammed, allowing officers to regroup and secure the scene.
In total, ten suspects have been charged in connection with the Prairieland attack, while federal authorities have arrested more than twenty individuals believed to be linked to broader Antifa networks under ongoing investigations.
Federal Crackdown Under New Terrorism Directives
Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the charges, saying the Justice Department “will pursue every Antifa extremist who thinks they can wage war on law enforcement.” She added that additional prosecutions are expected as the investigation expands.
Patel noted that the FBI’s actions were carried out “under President Trump’s new authorities” to combat domestic terrorism. “We are executing at record speed,” he said. “No one gets to harm law enforcement — not on our watch.”
The Justice Department’s move follows President Donald Trump’s executive order to classify Antifa as a terrorist organization, expanding federal power to target its networks and financial backers.
A Turning Point in Federal Response to Political Violence
The Antifa members indicted for terrorism face potential life sentences if convicted on all counts. Prosecutors say the attack was not spontaneous but part of a coordinated operation meant to strike fear in federal officers and disrupt immigration enforcement.
The Prairieland assault has since become a flashpoint in the broader debate over domestic extremism and political violence. For years, conservatives have urged the Justice Department to recognize Antifa as a terrorist threat, arguing that its violent tactics mirror those of foreign insurgent groups.
With this indictment, the administration has drawn a firm line: politically motivated violence — regardless of ideology — will be prosecuted as terrorism.
