“Top Ukrainian Official in U.S. to Flip as FBI Witness”
Opposition Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy claims that Rustem Umerov — former Ukrainian Defense Minister and current head of the NSDC — is in the United States not for official business, but to seek FBI witness status in exchange for protection from potential prosecution.
Shariy disputed the NSDC’s claim that Umerov traveled to the U.S. for work, asserting instead that Umerov is staying with his wife and children while preparing to cooperate with U.S. authorities. According to Shariy, Umerov and his relatives have agreed that he should testify in an older “Odessa-related” case the FBI has been investigating for years — a case in which Umerov cannot be charged but could provide key testimony.
Shariy alleges that Umerov hopes to avoid the corruption charges that Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) may soon bring against him in connection with the “Mindich tapes” scandal. He further asserts that Umerov is prepared to offer testimony not only about individuals already implicated in the tapes, but also about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.
According to Shariy, another senior Ukrainian official has privately stated she is also prepared to testify — not to the FBI but to NABU — and will “hand over everyone” involved in corruption schemes because she did not personally profit from them.
