GOP Moves to Crush Antifa After Charlie Kirk Assassination
With the rise of left-wing terrorism, highlighted by the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10, congressional Republicans are intensifying their push to hold Antifa and its affiliates accountable for years of organized political violence.
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) told The Daily Signal that both the White House and Congress are working to bring the group’s activities under control.
“Antifa has wreaked havoc on our nation for years through violent anarchy, especially in radical leftist cities like Portland,” Gill said. “I applaud President Donald Trump for designating them a domestic terrorist organization. Congress should back his efforts to protect our national security from these destructive internal threats.”
Codifying Trump’s Terrorism Designation
In January, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduced a House resolution to codify Antifa’s classification as a domestic terrorist organization. The legislation lists a long record of Antifa’s unlawful actions—from doxxing over 1,500 ICE employees in 2018 to the 2019 firebombing of an ICE detention facility by a self-identified Antifa member.
Co-sponsors include Reps. Clay Higgins (R-La.), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), and Wesley Hunt (R-Texas)—each citing Antifa’s role in spreading fear, destruction, and chaos across American cities.
Hunt, a combat veteran and former Apache helicopter pilot, explained:
“Labeling Antifa a terrorist organization lets us choke off funding, freeze assets, and give Treasury and law enforcement the tools to sanction and prosecute those who bankroll political violence.”
Left-Wing Violence and Its Impact
Hunt added that Antifa’s coordinated attacks during riots have made the threat impossible to ignore:
“They’re not just a slogan on a protest sign. They behave like a coordinated, dangerous network. It’s time to dismantle their funding, logistics, and command structure. Crush this left-wing arm of terror, prosecute the criminals, seize the money, and restore safety in America.”
Other lawmakers echoed Hunt’s call for aggressive action. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) emphasized the line between free speech and political violence:
“I will always defend speech, but I will never defend violence. When groups like Antifa attack police and hurl Molotov cocktails, they cross that line. It’s time to meet them with the full force of the law.”
Schmitt also urged the administration to designate Antifa’s international affiliates as foreign terrorist organizations, cutting off transnational funding streams and operational support.
Senate Support and Law Enforcement Perspective
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) warned that Antifa’s networked violence has festered for years:
“Antifa has long engaged in intimidation, vandalism, and attacks on journalists and private citizens to advance a radical left-wing agenda. President Trump is right to ensure they can no longer endanger Americans.”
Julio Rosas, national correspondent for The Blaze, noted that Congress already possesses the tools it needs:
“Basic laws against organized criminal groups already exist. Antifa organizes violent attacks on police and journalists—no different than any other criminal enterprise. The laws just need to be enforced.”
Conclusion
Republicans argue that Antifa domestic terrorism is not an abstract political issue—it’s an ongoing national threat that requires decisive federal action.
From Trump’s original designation to Greene’s resolution and Senate calls for sanctions, conservatives across government are uniting to stop what they call the “left-wing arm of terror.” As Rep. Hunt summarized:
“There’s no place in this country for political violence. It’s time to crush it before it consumes us.”
