Formaldehyde and The FDA’s “Dirty Little Secret” They Don’t Want You To Know
Women around the world have been using beauty products for generations. From foundations and blush to lipstick and mascara, these cosmetics have become not only a staple for women, but a tradition. But what if the same products that were designed to help women look and feel their best are actually slowly poisoning them?
In a shocking new study out of Notre Dame, research suggests that over half of all makeup sold in the U.S. and Canada contain high levels of dangerous toxins. These toxins are called perfluoroalkyl substances, also known as “PFAS”
These PFAS have been linked to cancers and cases of reduced birth weight. These chemicals are the same chemicals also commonly used in nonstick frying pans.
Even the CDC recognizes the dangers of these “PFAS”, stating: “Exposure to high levels of some PFAS can lead to an increased risk of kidney and testicular cancers, changes in liver enzymes, decreased infant birth weights, increased risk of high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia in pregnant women.”
Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer can be found in U.S. food, in the water supply, and many other everyday products. The FDA has all but failed Americans. However, no category of consumer products is subjected to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products. It’s essentially a free-for-all when it comes to toxins in the cosmetic and skin care industry.
Even today, the FDA allows U.S. skincare companies to market their products as “non-toxic” to consumers, as long as they contain less than 49% toxic ingredients.
Since 2009, 595 cosmetics manufacturers have reported using 88 chemicals, in more than 73,000 products, that have been linked to cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm.
But why? Why would the industry of beauty poison their own customers?
The beauty industry generated $579.20 billion in 2023 and the global beauty industry revenue is expected to top $716 billion by 2025.
As the beauty industry continues to increase revenues, so does the cancer industry: By 2026, cancer drug sales are expected to almost double to $320.6 billion in the U.S. alone.
Beauty and cancer are both profitable businesses to be in. But how can you protect yourself from these toxins hidden in the products you use every day?
Be selective and choose brands with a commitment to clean products and a track record to prove it. Beware the “dirty little secret” ingredients that include harmful toxins in your skincare:
- Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
- Paraformaldehyde, a type of formaldehyde.
- Methylene glycol, a type of formaldehyde.
- Quaternium 15, which releases formaldehyde.
- Mercury, which can damage the kidneys and nervous system.
- Dibutyl and diethylhexyl phthalates, which disrupt hormones and damage the reproductive system.
- Isobutyl and isopropyl parabens, which disrupt hormones and harm the reproductive system.
- The long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known as PFAS, which have been linked to cancer.
- M- and o-phenylenediamine, used in hair dyes, which irritate and sensitize the skin, damage DNA and can cause cancer
