The Bill

The State of New York has introduced a bill that aims to amend the education law. The bill requires the inclusion of a curriculum or instruction on LGBT awareness in schools.

The proposed law states that the commissioner of education, in collaboration with relevant agencies, would develop a curriculum or instruction on the historical treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender non-conforming individuals. This curriculum or instruction should be tailored to the specific needs and abilities of students at different grade levels.

Schools would have the option to include this curriculum or instruction as part of their social studies program or incorporate it in any other way they find suitable.

The bill will go into effect on July 1, 2024, and will apply to school years beginning on or after that date. Any necessary changes to existing rules and regulations to implement this law will be authorized and completed by the effective date of the law.
