Section 1: Short Title - The bill may be referred to as the "Smart Border Protection Act". Section 2: Additional Funding for Certain U.S. Customs and Border Protection Operations - Hiring: - The Secretary of Homeland Security is authorized to receive $300,000,000 to hire personnel for U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations at ports of entry. This includes agents, processing assistants, technicians, agriculture specialists, and import specialists. - Screening: - The Secretary of Homeland Security is authorized to receive $200,000,000 to procure, deploy, install, maintain, and operate screening technology at U.S. Customs and Border Protection ports of entry. This includes non-intrusive inspection technology to inspect and detect cargo for illicit materials, such as fentanyl. - Infrastructure: - The Administrator of General Services is authorized to receive $70,000,000 for port of entry infrastructure. This includes improvements to port of entry buildings, expansion or improvements to vehicle inspection lanes, expansion or improvements to pedestrian pathways and lanes, and modernization within ports of entry. - Availability: - The amounts of funding authorized in this section must be spent within one year after the enactment of this section. - The authorized funding is in addition to any other amounts made available to the Secretary of Homeland Security or the Administrator of General Services.
