HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

RECOGNIZING THE PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL FOR PROMOTING GREATER AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ISSUES IN HAWAII AND THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION BY BUILDING BRIDGES, INSPIRING YOUNG LEADERS AND DEVELOPING GLOBAL CITIZENS.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council (PAAC) is an independent, international education nonprofit with a mission to promote a greater awareness and understanding of foreign affairs issues with special attention to Hawaiis dynamic position at the heart of the Pacific; and

 

     WHEREAS, PAAC evolved from the Institute of Pacific Relations, which was founded in 1925 and is credited with fostering the initial development of contemporary understanding between East and West; and

 

     WHEREAS, PAAC strives to bring foreign affairs leaders and specialists from around the world to Hawaii to speak on international issues and interact with local leaders in business, government, and education; it also seeks to engage the community on global issues, foster international understanding, and prepare the next generation of global leaders; and

 

     WHEREAS, PAAC has brought global education to more than 88,000 high school students statewide since 1954 with over 1,600 of these in the 2015-2016 school year, and also invests in Hawaiis teachers by providing workshops and travel opportunities, thus enabling them to enrich their course curriculums; and

 

     WHEREAS, in its 63rd year, PAACs vision is for the people of Hawaii to be engaged global citizens with the ability to initiate positive change for themselves, their communities, and the world, and to this end, PAAC endeavors to continue the expansion of its mission of international education for all of Hawaii's people; now, therefore,

 

                BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that this body hereby commends and congratulates the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL, its Board of Governors, Executive Director Niki Shishido, staff, volunteers, and sponsors for their indispensable contributions at home and abroad in promoting international awareness and understanding, and extends to them its best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
