SENATE BILL No. 1075

     A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled

 

"Public health code,"

 

(MCL 333.1101 to 333.25211) by adding section 5125a.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 5125a. A licensed health professional in charge of the

 

care of a newborn infant, or if none, the licensed health

 

professional in charge at the birth of an infant, shall administer

 

prophylactic vitamin K to the infant through an intramuscular

 

injection within 1 hour after the birth of the infant, or as soon

 

after the birth of the infant as the health professional is

 

present. If any vitamin K deficiency bleeding, or a hemorrhage of

 

unknown etiology that is not better explained by another medical

 

cause, occurs within 6 months after the date of birth of an infant


who did not receive an intramuscular injection of prophylactic

 

vitamin K, the licensed health professional having care of the

 

infant shall report the condition to the local health department.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
